Shankar Dada preferred to stay in the streets with old men to win the heart of evil man who occupied the bungalow of the girl he loved and the old people she took care of. Jesus, God in flesh and bone, preferred to be crucified on a cruel cross to win your heart, so stubborn with sin.
Shankar Dada told the truth that he was after all a local goon – and not the professor oozing with knowledge about Gandhiji he pretended to be – to his lady love, Jhanvi, even though he knew she could leave him after having heard that. Jesus told the truth always. When asked if he was the Son of God, he knew if he replied in the positive, he would be crucified. But that was the truth – he was God’s unique son who was born to the virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit. And he claimed to be THE TRUTH. If he had accepted that he was born out of a normal relationship between a man and a woman, they would have let him go. But Jesus preferred to die, than lie. And so when the high priest who had the power to release him or crucify him, asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” Jesus told the truth so that he could die for you and me on the Cross. He took the punishment that was due to us upon himself on the Cross, the Bible declares. Will you accept the truth about yourself? Will you accept that you are sinner who cannot save yourself and that you need the Sinless Jesus as your Savior?
Shankar Dada, upon the influence of Gandhiji, does good for the man who meant evil for him. When the marriage of the daughter of the man who took his heart-throb’s mansion gets stopped, he doesn’t say, “Good for you – you deserve it!” Instead, he woos the would-be Son in Law to agree for the marriage. Jesus did something similar. We were his enemies, so to speak. We did several things that hurt his holy heart. We became jealous. We lusted. We stole. We did what not. We became enemies of Jesus, who was the Holy One who committed no sin. Yet, when we were still sinners, Christ died for us. What an amazing love!
There came a point in Shankar Dada’s life that he decided to tell the truth and never lie. There came a point in Shankar Dada’s life when he decided he decided to tell the truth and never lie. There came a point in Shankar Dada’s life when he decided to embrace Gandhigiri instead of Dadagiri. There was a U-turn in his life. Jesus, teaches that needs to be an “U-turn” in your life too. He called that “U turn” repentance. He preached, “No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” Will you not turn from sin and turn to Jesus who will enable you to live with his peace – a peace which the world and its pleasures cannot give!

M.K Gandhi in his ‘Open Letter’ written before 19 December, 1894, published now in The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi., 1.187, II., 3-16, said “Jesus Christ who taught us to love our enemies and to give our cloak to the one who wanted the coat, and to hold out the right cheek when the left was smitten, and who swept away the distinction between the Jew and the Gentile, would never brook a disposition that causes a man to be so proud of himself as to consider himself polluted even by the touch of a fellow-being.” completely acknoweldging that it was Christ who taught the so-called Gandhian principles.
Christ taught and practiced it. Gandhi taught and partially practiced it without extending the same equal status to Dalits.
